Family Support Services

Smart Start of Brunswick County works with many different agencies that provide services to children and families throughout Brunswick County to identify needed programs, services and resources to meet these needs. By blending and leveraging existing resources and providing funding through Smart Start, private donations or grants, the following programs are made possible to the young children and families in Brunswick County:

     Smart Start Parents As Teachers

The Parents as Teachers program is an evidenced-based home visiting model designed to ensure young children are healthy, safe and ready to learn.  Our Parent Educators, including a bilingual Parent Educator, provide information to parents on the stages of child development, learning materials and help parents develop the skills needed to meet their child's needs.   Educators conduct screenings to ensure children are meeting developmental milestones and link parents to other community resources. The Parent Educators  conduct home visits and hold monthly group events and meetings.

   Raising a Reader

Raising a Reader fosters a reading routine whereby children from local child care centers bring home bright red bags filled with high-quality picture books each week. The books feature artwork, age-appropriate language, and multicultural themes. Raising a Reader mission fosters healthy brain development, parent–child bonding, and early literacy skills critical for school success.

Call Gina Grego, Raising a Reader Coordinator, at 754-3166 for more information.

Smart Start and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library are working together to get books into the hands of North Carolina’s youngest children.

In 2017, North Carolina’s state lawmakers included $3.5 million in the first year and $7 million in the second year of the state budget for Smart Start to administer Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library across North Carolina. Children will receive an age-appropriate book mailed directly to them each month at no cost. They will receive free books until their fifth birthday.  For more information call Carol Keen at 754-3166 or register by clicking this link:
