January 23rd 6:30-8:30pm – Where’s The Math $10 – Participants will: Understand that learning math is grounded in conceptual understanding. Participants will learn that mathematizing means seeing math in daily life and using mathematical language and concepts to frame, analyze, and explore situations. Participants will learn that mathematizing is: Engaging children in talking about their ride on the bus in the morning: “How many people were on the bus with you? How long did it take you to get to school this morning?” Participants will learn to help children resolve real-life problems and conflicts: “Joey, I hear you saying it it not fair that you have two cars when Taahira has four. What could you both do about this? Participants will use time and numbers to figure this scenario out. Participants will develop intentional learning experiences and lesson plans around mathematizing.
